Description

DICLOFENAC GEL: topical relief for arthritis pain

Diclofenac gel is a topical NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) that you rub into the skin over a painful joint. It relieves arthritis pain in the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles and feet, with less of the medicine reaching the rest of the body than tablets.

Strength

In the US, diclofenac gel is sold over the counter at 1% strength. Check the strength on your tube. Higher strengths need a prescription.

How to use it

  • Use the dosing card in the pack to measure the right amount for the joint.
  • Gently rub it into the skin over the painful joint up to 4 times a day.
  • Don’t use it on more than 2 body areas at the same time.
  • Wash your hands after use, unless you’re treating your hands.
  • Don’t cover the area with a bandage or apply heat.
  • For adults 18 and over. Don’t use for more than 21 days unless a doctor says so.

Do not use it

  • On broken, damaged or infected skin
  • If you’ve had an allergic reaction (such as asthma, hives or swelling) to aspirin or any other pain reliever
  • Right before or after heart surgery
  • In the last 3 months of pregnancy, as it may harm the baby

Ask a doctor before use if you

  • Have had stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Have heart disease, high blood pressure, or kidney or liver disease
  • Take a blood thinner, a steroid, or another NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen
  • Are 60 or older

Stop using it and ask a doctor if you get

  • Signs of stomach bleeding, such as black stools or vomiting blood
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech (get emergency help)
  • Skin irritation, redness or blistering where you applied it
  • Pain that gets worse or lasts more than 7 days
