Description
ROGAINE 5% (Minoxidil Topical Solution)
Rogaine 5% contains minoxidil 5%, a topical treatment that helps regrow hair in people with hereditary hair loss on the top of the scalp. The 5% solution is for men. Women should use a product approved for them, such as the 2% solution, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Who it’s for
Minoxidil works best for hereditary (genetic) thinning on the top or crown of the scalp. It is not meant for a receding hairline at the front, or for hair loss with another cause.
How it works
Minoxidil is thought to improve blood flow to hair follicles and lengthen the growth phase of the hair cycle. Over time, this can help shrunken follicles grow thicker, longer hairs.
How to use it
- Apply 1 mL twice a day directly to the thinning area of a dry scalp, using the dropper or applicator provided.
- Spread it gently with your fingertips, then wash your hands well.
- Let it dry fully before using styling products or going to bed.
- Don’t use more than directed. More product or more frequent use won’t speed up results.
What to expect
- It usually takes 2 to 4 months of twice-daily use to see results.
- You may notice more shedding in the first few weeks. This is common and usually means older hairs are making way for new growth.
- If you see no regrowth after 4 months, stop using it and talk to a doctor.
- Keep using it to maintain results. Hair regrown with minoxidil is usually lost within a few months of stopping.
Do not use if
- You are under 18
- You have no family history of hair loss, or your hair loss is sudden, patchy or unexplained
- Your hair loss is related to childbirth
- Your scalp is red, inflamed, infected, irritated or painful
- You use other medicines on your scalp
- You are a woman (use a product made for women instead)
Stop using it and see a doctor if you get
- Chest pain, a fast heartbeat, faintness or dizziness
- Sudden, unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet
- Scalp irritation or redness that doesn’t go away
- Unwanted facial hair growth
Other safety tips
- For external use on the scalp only. Avoid contact with the eyes. If it gets in your eyes, rinse well with cool water.
- The solution is flammable. Keep it away from fire and flame, and don’t smoke while applying it.
- Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease.
- Keep it away from pets. Minoxidil is highly toxic to cats, even in small amounts, so don’t let them lick treated hair or skin.
