Description
ALLEGRA (Fexofenadine): non-drowsy allergy relief
Allegra contains fexofenadine, a non-drowsy antihistamine. It relieves the symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever) and itching from hives. Fexofenadine is one of the antihistamines least likely to cause drowsiness, so it suits people who need to stay alert at work or behind the wheel.
What it helps with
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Itchy nose or throat
- Itching and rash from hives
How it works
Fexofenadine blocks histamine, the chemical your body releases in response to allergens such as pollen, dust, mould and pet dander. Blocking it calms the sneezing, itching and watery eyes it causes.
How to take it
- Adults and children 12 years and over: the usual dose is 180 mg once a day. This product is also listed in a 120 mg strength. Follow the directions on your pack, or ask your doctor or pharmacist which dose is right for you. Don’t take more than directed.
- Take it with water only. Fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange and apple can reduce how much fexofenadine your body absorbs.
- Don’t take it within about 15 minutes of an antacid containing aluminium or magnesium, as this also reduces absorption.
- If you have kidney disease, ask a doctor before use.
Possible side effects
Side effects are usually mild and may include headache, nausea, dizziness, back pain or drowsiness in some people.
Warnings
- Don’t use if you’ve had an allergic reaction to fexofenadine.
- Get emergency help if hives come with trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or lips, wheezing, dizziness or fainting.
- Stop use and ask a doctor if an allergic reaction occurs, or if hives don’t improve after 3 days.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a healthcare professional before use.

Frequently asked questions
Why shouldn’t I take Allegra with fruit juice?
Grapefruit, orange and apple juice can reduce how much fexofenadine your body absorbs, making it less effective. Take it with water.
Does Allegra make you sleepy?
Fexofenadine is one of the least sedating antihistamines, so most people stay alert.
What’s the difference between 120 mg and 180 mg?
180 mg once a day is the usual over-the-counter adult dose in the US. Other strengths are used under a doctor’s direction.
