Description

IMODIUM (Loperamide) 2 mg: relief from diarrhoea

Imodium contains loperamide 2 mg. It relieves diarrhoea, including travellers’ diarrhoea, by slowing down the movement of the gut so more water is absorbed from the stool.

How to take it

  • Adults and children 12 years and over: 2 tablets (4 mg) after the first loose stool, then 1 tablet (2 mg) after each loose stool that follows.
  • Don’t take more than 4 tablets (8 mg) in 24 hours.
  • Children under 12: ask a doctor. A lower dose is used for children.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to replace what you lose with diarrhoea.

Do not use if you have

  • Bloody or black stools
  • A fever
  • Mucus in your stool
  • An allergy to loperamide

Heart warning

Taking more than the recommended dose can cause serious heart rhythm problems, which can be fatal. Never take more than directed. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you take other medicines, as some can raise loperamide levels in the body.

Stop using it and ask a doctor if

  • Diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days
  • Your stomach becomes swollen or bloated
  • You get a rash or other allergic reaction
  • You feel faint or have a fast or irregular heartbeat
